The Hyundai Sonata has been on the road for 40 years, having seen a ton of change over its time. If you’re in the market for a used one, it may be hard to figure out which one is right for you, and we want to make that a bit easier. We’ll take a look at some more recent models to help make sure you get the car that is right for you.
Key Takeaways:
- The best mileage for the Hyundai Sonata models is held by the hybrids. But that shouldn’t be a surprise.
- If you want something a bit more “aggressive,” then you’d want to look for an N Line model.
- During the eighth generation, you can find a ton of safety features as well as active features to help keep you on the road.
Eighth Generation (2019-Present)
While this generation is sold as a mid-size vehicle, the EPA classifies it as a full-size vehicle. Unlike the previous generation, this one is an inch wider and nearly two inches longer.
This generation uses the “Sensuous Sportiness” design language, and thanks to this, you can find a more pronounced design. This comes with a fastback-like shape to make the vehicle look sportier than before.
The interior also saw some changes, now having an optional 12.3-inch digital cluster and a 10.3-inch center screen. The safety system is also great for this generation. This is made of three radar systems, five cameras, and more than a dozen ultrasonic sensors. This allows the vehicle to have standard adaptive cruise control, forward-collision braking, and even lane-following assist.
If you’re looking for something that is a bit more capable and sporty, then the N-Line is what you want. This comes with a 2.5L I4 engine that can produce 290 horsepower, as well as 311 lb-ft of torque.
This engine has surprisingly good gas mileage, with the EPA rating it at 32 MPG. At a full tank, you can go up to 509 miles, making for an even better vehicle.
Seventh Generation (2014-2018)
When this generation came out, it was available in three trims. The main engine was a 2.4L I4 engine, while the other one was a 1.6L I4. The optional engine that was only available on the Sport, and Limited trims, was the 2.0L I4. This engine was not available on the middle of the road Eco trim.
It wasn't until 2016 that the hybrid came out for this generation. Being mostly a carryover from 2014, you could expect the same EPA estimated 41 MPG combined.
The plug-in hybrid variant also came out this generation, in the back half of 2015. While at the time it was only available in 10 states, it’s possible to find a used model across the US. This variant has the lowest amount of total range at 600 miles. But it does have the benefit of being able to go up to 27 miles on electric only.
