Kia is often thought of as some of the most reliable vehicles on the market, and with a ton of SUVs to pick from, it may be hard to pinpoint exactly what you want. That’s where we’re here to help. We’ll take a brief look at their SUV lineup so you know which one will best suit your needs before you take a deeper dive into the Kia lineup.
Key takeaways
- When it comes to the best used Kia SUVs for families, there’s tons of options depending on what you need, with most models accommodating up to 5 passengers.
- If you want to tow 5,000-pounds, or just want the 8 passenger seating, then the Telluride is the one that you want as it works for handymen, and soccer moms alike.
- The most unique model is the EV9 being that the second row seats can rotate the look backwards.
EV6
The EV6 is one of Kia’s takes on a battery electric vehicle. Where this vehicle shines over gas engines is its 310 miles of total range. While this isn’t as far as some other gas engines can go, it will save you money at the pump. This model is designed for smaller families, coming with a 5 passenger capacity. Being that this model was introduced in 2022, it will come with some modern features.
EV9
Another take on a battery electric vehicle from Kia, this time it comes in the form of a 7 seater. This is a better option for larger families, and when compared with its 304 miles of total range, it can keep up with its smaller sibling. One standout feature of the EV9 is that its second row captain’s chairs can swivel 180-degrees to face the third row, making it a perfect option for long family road trips.
Niro
The Niro differs slightly from the ones that we’ve already covered. While this model is a 5 seater, it comes as both a hybrid, and an electric vehicle depending on what you find. For the hybrid, you can get up to 588 miles of total range, getting up to 53 MPG combined. While it may be tempting to go with the EV version, the 253 total miles it gets may dissuade you.
Moving on to the gas powered segment, there’s the Seltos, and this comes in a 5 seat configuration. Like most other models so far, this one is a reliable family transporter. Coming with a 2.0L I4, and a 1.6L turbocharged I4 option. Of these two engines, the one that you want to go with for efficiency is the 2.0L I4 as it gets 31 MPG combined. If you want power, then you can get the turbocharged I4 that makes 195 horsepower.
Being one of the larger models, this one comes with three row seating, capable of seating 7 passengers. In recent years, this model came with two 2.5L I4 options, with one being turbocharged. This model also features a hybrid option, being the 1.6L I4.
If you opt for the hybrid option, you can get up to 655 miles on one tank, and for a vehicle this size, that’s nothing to scoff at. If you don’t want to go for the hybrid, then the non turbocharged 2.5L I4 is the way to go as it gets 460 miles on one tank.
Going back down to a 5 seater, this model was one of the last on the market to feature a manual transmission, being that it was discontinued in 2022. This makes it a fun little SUV to keep an eye out for if you want one with modern features, but like a stickshift. In recent years, this model was able to go 429 miles on one tank, thanks to the efficient 2.0L I4 engine.
The Sportage is yet another 5 seat configuration, but unlike the other models, this is one of the least efficient models in the 5-seater segment. This is likely due to the slight off-road capabilities that it comes with such as the terrain management system.
While it is less efficient, it doesn’t make it bad, with the most recent iterations getting 28 MPG combined. If you do like the look of the Sportage, and want even more mileage, then you can look for the hybrid options that can get 43 MPG combined, but you will lose out on some of the fun that the gas engine provides.
Unlike other models, this one was specifically designed for the US. Coming in a three-row SUV, this model will seat up to 8 passengers, making it the only one in the Kia lineup that can accomplish that.
This model has the distinction of being able to tow up to 5,500-pounds in recent years, thanks to its V6 engine that makes 291 horsepower, and 262 lb-ft of torque. Being that this is a larger engine, it does lack a bit of efficiency, coming in at 22 MPG combined in recent years.
