While this model has been produced since ‘65, it only hit North American markets in 2014. This generation offers two wheelbases. The short one was 129.9-inches long, while the long one was 147.6-inches long.
If you're looking for a chassis cab, or a cutaway, the wheelbase lengths change. It came with three wheelbase lengths with the short one being 138-inches, the medium one being 155.7-inches, and the long one being 178-inches long.
This generation of Transit used a unibody design, as opposed to a seperate frame. Thanks to the use of boron steel, this gave an increase to 600-pounds for the payload. This gave the North American market a great first impression.
For the North American market, the Transit borrowed engines from the F-Series. The standard engine was a 275 horsepower 3.7L V6. A 3.5L twin-turbo is an optional engine that produced 310 horsepower, while the 3.2L I5 was offered in 2015, producing 185 horsepower.
For the first few years, these engines were paired with a 6-speed automatic engine, but in 2020, that was replaced by a 10-speed automatic engine.
While it may be rare to find, some of the 3.7L engines may have been converted by Ford to run on compressed natural gas, or liquified petroleum gas.
Much like the rest of the features, the van came and still comes in three roof heights. If you’re not needing something tall, you can look for the low roof that is 83.6-inches tall. If you do need the most height, you can look for one that is 110.1-inches tall. If you need something in between, you can look for one that is 100.8-inches tall.
When 2020 came around, a new engine became the new standard. A 275 horsepower, 3.5L V6 replaces the 3.7L V6. The 3.5L twin-turbo V6 remained as an option.
This year also saw all-wheel drive rejoin the option list. A crew van body style was introduced to the lineup. This was a mix between the passenger, and cargo van. Offering seating for up to 5 people, while still retaining a large cargo area in the rear.
To make things a bit easier to get in and out of, Ford gave optional power sliding doors, as well as dual sliding doors optional. If you manage to find a used model that is equipped with these, then you’ll have an easy time loading, and unloading your things.
In tests done by Car and Driver, they found that the maximum payload of their Transit is 3,512-pounds. Making it a great option for those who want an alternative to a pickup.
