Key Takeaways:
- The more recent iterations of the Rogue are perfect for family road trips.
- If you're a super parent looking for the next best vehicle for you and your family, it's hard to beat the Rogue Platinum.
- The Rogue has a limited Star Wars edition model that helps make you stand out while remaining comfortable.
- The S trim has an SL Premium package that helps bring the more economical option into luxury territory.
First Generation (2007 - 2013)
The first generation hit North American roads in 2007, and with it came three trims to look for. The trims are the S, SV, and SL. All trim levels were available in both FWD and AWD variants.
2011 saw the first set of changes for the Rogue. This came with new low rolling resistance tubes and a new underbody cover. The Rogue S Krōm edition also came out this year. This came with a more aggressive styling, sport-tuned exhaust, and 18-inch polished wheels.
Being that the SV is the mid-level trim, it has an optional SL package that brings it up a notch. This comes with leather seats, touchscreen navigation, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
For 2012, the Rogue came with even more changes. This came with new wheel designs, a sport mode for the CVT, and an Around View Monitor for the SL package.
The Krōm was replaced by the Special Edition, adding 16-inch alloy wheels, a premium audio system, satellite radio, and a rear view monitor. This helps bring the S from the starter trim to a higher level.
Second Generation (2014 - 2020)
When this generation hit the road, it came with optional third-row 7 passenger seating, standard four-wheel independent suspension, and four-wheel disc brakes.
Early second-generation models came with a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine. This engine was capable of producing 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. It also came with a Sport Mode switch and once again, 3 trim levels.
In 2016, the Rogue became Nissan’s best-selling model, representing nearly 15% of all of Nissan’s total sales. This year also saw some new tech being added. This tech is Siri Eyes Free and NissanConnect with Navigation.
2017 marked the midpoint of the generation, so in came a new facelift. This saw new looks all around the vehicle, while a new feature was added to the SL Premium package. These were the LED headlamps.
The Rogue Hybrid also joined the family in 2017, coming with regenerative braking and a 2.0L four-cylinder gas engine that has a power rating of 141 horsepower and lb-ft of torque. When combined with the electric motor, you will get 176 horsepower. This came in two trim levels, the S and SL.
If you're a film buff who likes galaxies far, far away, then the Rogue One Nissan Rogue is right up your alley. Inspired by the Star Wars Rogue One film, this edition came with either Glacier White or Magnetic Black exterior colors, as well as a charcoal interior. This was only available on SV trims, but it featured a panoramic sunroof, BOSE audio system, black accents all across the vehicle, and even a Death Trooper helmet replica. While only 5,400 were built, you want to keep your eye out for this one.
For 2018, the Rogue saw Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind spot warning become standard features. The SV trim starts to pull away a little this year as it saw a bigger touchscreen radio join the standard equipment list. The optional 2-person 3rd row that was once offered for the S and SV trims has now been discontinued.
Thanks to all of the safety features that Nissan has given to the Rogue, it received Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS in 2014, while still holding on to Top Safety Pick in the 2018 update.
Third Generation (2021 - Present)
Being built on a new platform, the new generation of Rogue does have similar dimensions as the 2nd generation. This new build looks boxier and has a squared-off front end.
This new generation also comes with a new direct injection engine that is capable of generating 181 horsepower and is paired with a CVT. The new Platinum trim comes with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, heated rear seats, and wireless phone connectivity. The rest of the lineup sees either an 8- or 9-inch screen join the line.
2The year 022 saw a new engine join the Rogue. Ditching the 2.5L engine, the new 1.5L three-cylinder is more powerful, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, while being more fuel efficient. The year 2024 saw a refresh, and with it came a new 12.3-inch touchscreen for the SL and Platinum trims.
According to the EPA, the 2022 Rogue will be able to get 33 mpg combined, thanks to this new engine. City drivers can expect 30 mpg, while people who enjoy family road trips can expect 37 mpg on the highway.
