When it comes to the Mitsubishi lineup, there are a few SUVs to pick from. While they are part of the same family, they each have their roles that they fill out. We’ll take a look at these models to see which are the best used Mitsubishi SUV models to buy.
Key Takeaways:
- While the larger Outlander can seat more people, it still shares the same MPG as the Outlander Sport.
- The best current model Mitsubishi SUV when it comes to mileage is the Eclipse Cross, sitting at 27 mpg combined, making it the best family road trip vehicle.
- The first few generations of Outlander are smaller than the rest, making the later generations more comfortable.
The Montero is a former model, but it still has some unique features, such as the last two rows capable of being turned into a bed, making it a great car for outdoor enthusiasts.
Mitsubishi Outlander Sport
The Outlander Sport came out in 2010 as a subcompact crossover SUV. This vehicle had an overall length of 169-172 inches. This was able to seat up to five people, thanks to the smaller design, unlike its larger brother. This design was done to return to a more fuel-efficient design, rather than larger and bulkier products.
Depending on the year model, there’s one of two engines that you can look for. The first engine that was released was the 2.0L engine. This engine was able to get 26 mpg combined. While the city mpg was good, sitting at 24 miles, the highway mileage is where it shines. You will be able to get up to 31 mpg. Being that this engine is smaller, it is a slightly weaker engine at 148 horsepower.
The new engine that was introduced in 2015 was the 2.4L engine. This has a slightly lower mpg at 25 combined. Able to go 23 city miles and 28 highway miles. While it does offer slightly less mileage, it does come with more power, sitting at 168 horsepower.
Eclipse Cross
The Eclipse Cross comes as a compact crossover SUV, hitting the roads in 2017. This is one of the more unique-looking trims in the family. This model started with a length of 173 inches but gained a few inches, now sitting at 1179 inches starting in 2021, while seating 5 passengers.
The Eclipse Cross comes with a 1.5L engine for the US market. The EPA estimates that the vehicle will get 27 mpg combined, sitting at 26 city miles and 29 highway miles. Being that this engine is on the smaller side, it produces 152 horsepower.
Outlander
The Outlander is the larger and more capable sibling to the Outlander Sport. Coming in at 179 inches for its debut, with more recent models sitting at 185-inches, this can seat up to seven people.
While it does have a larger size, that doesn't mean that it comes with more power. Both the Outlander and Outlander Sport share the same engine, producing the same amount of power and same mileage.
The current models are the only ones that are in production for the US, but you can still find some retired models on roads and lots today if you’re lucky.
Montero (Former Model)
The Montero was on the roads in the US from 1983 to 2006. Classed as a full-size SUV, this model came in both 3-door and 5-door variants, both filling the same purpose. The larger 5-door variant sat up to seven people, similar to the modern day Outlander.
This model was unique as the third and second row could be combined to make a bed, making it the perfect vehicle to take on road trips into the great outdoors.
Endeavor (Former Model)
The Endeavor was Mitsubishi’s first shot at tapping into the North American market directly. This mid-size crossover SUV was built in Illinois under the “Project America” program. This aimed at bringing vehicles to the US market that didn't need to adhere to any other markets like other vehicles do.
While this model did have favorable reviews from the start, it couldn’t quite hold on to warrant having a US-based production, at least during those years of the Endeavor.
